NICKEL PER TICKET PROGRAM OVERVIEW
IndieSpace celebrates and centers independent theater-making in New York City. We provide radically transparent, responsive and equity-focused funding, real estate programs, professional development, and advocacy to individual artists, theater companies, and indie venues. IndieSpace operates the Indie Theater Fund, which provides financial and other assistance to organizations and individual artists creating independent theater in the five boroughs of New York City.
Why a Nickel Per Ticket?
The Nickel Per Ticket program is about revenue sharing. If we all contribute a little of our income, that little adds up and supports the entire indie theater community with grants, space, and more. By implementing a 5 cent per ticket charge in many indie, Off-Broadway, and Broadway venues, indie theater could sustain itself for years to come.
Indie theater artists have faced many challenges and have been under-resourced for decades before COVID-19. While the pandemic has strained so much of our city, the effect on indie theater has been especially devastating.
Without these artists, the entire theater ecosystem collapses. If we all pitch in to provide safety, support, and equitable resources, the artists that lead our arts community and inspire us can endure. New York City and our wider theater community are brighter, healthier, and more creative when our indie theater artists thrive.
Who Does Your Nickel Serve?
Your nickel supports indie theater makers who have been historically excluded from funding and real estate and who typically work outside of the commercial context. These artists are the lifeblood of New York City and the theater ecosystem.
